Studied egyptology, art history and archaeology at Leiden University. Curator of the Egyptian department of the Leiden Museum since 1978. Joined the Saqqara excavations in 1975 and first recorded pottery, then objects, and increasingly also dealt with architectural description, restoration, and epigraphy. Joint field director since 1999.
