Substructure of the anonymous tomb
The shaft leading to the burial-chambers opens in the centre of the courtyard. It is surrounded by a recessed ledge for supporting the heavy covering-slabs. These are now lost and instead the aperture was found surrounded by loosely stacked fragments of limestone (including relief blocks) and mud-bricks. This is a clear sign that it was entered before by tomb-robbers, and the presence of Coptic blocks in these dry-stone walls indicates that this was probably in the 19th century. So far, we have been unable to excavate the shaft, where we hope to find more information on the tomb's date and on the identity of its owner.
